Welcome To Umred Jungle

The Umred-Pauni-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary, about 50 kilometers from Nagpur and 60 kilometers from Bhandara, is spread across Pauni Tahsil of Bhandara district and Umred, Kuhi, and Bhiwapur Taluka of Nagpur district. The forest along the Wainganga River connects this sanctuary to the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve. There are breeding tigers, herds of Gaur, wild dogs, and unique animals like flying squirrels, pangolins, and honey badgers in the sanctuary.

It is surrounded on the northeast by the Wainganga River and the Gose Khurd Dam, on the south by State Highway 9 and Bhiwapur Town, on the west by Umred, and in the northwest by a narrow 10 km long range of 600–800 m hills. It lies 40 kilometers north of the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, 50 kilometers southwest of Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, and 60 kilometers from Nagpur, Maharashtra. Pench Tiger Reserve is located 80 kilometers to the northwest.

This stunning sanctuary can be accessed through Kharandla Gate, Pauni Gate, and Gothangaon Gate.

About Umred Jungle

Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary, just 58 kilometers from Nagpur! It spans 180 square kilometers, split between the Nagpur and Bhandara Divisions, divided by the Maru River merging with the Vainganga River near Bhiwapur. The eastern region along the Pauni Nilaj road, covering 150 square kilometers of dense forest, connects to the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, promoting biodiversity and wildlife conservation.

Our sanctuary is home to a variety of wildlife identified through sightings, track analysis, and interviews with locals. Carnivores like Tigers, Sloth Bears, Leopards, Wild Dogs, Ratels, Indian Foxes, Wolves, Jackals, and Jungle Cats thrive, along with herbivores like Gaurs, Blue Bulls, Sambar Deer, Barking Deer, Wild Boars, and Spotted Deers. Umred Karhandla has seen more tourists lately, attracted by its proximity to Nagpur and frequent tiger sightings. The sanctuary's appeal also lies in its rich plant life, mainly 'Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests.'

The sanctuary features dry teak-bearing forests, with teak making up to 60 percent of the crop composition. Teak associates like Dhaoda, Ain, Achar, Mohuwa, Lendia, Bhirra, Tendu, Semal, Rohan, and Tiwas create a vibrant ecosystem. Teak plantations coexist with natural forest tracts, enhancing biodiversity.

Vision Of Our Leaders

"I salute all those working towards wildlife protection. Be it lions, tigers and leopards, India is seeing a steady rise in the population of various animals. We should do everything possible to ensure protection of our forests and safe habitats for animals".
- PM Shri Narendra Modi

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has consistently emphasized the importance of forest conservation and environmental protection. In May 2025, he praised the Supreme Court’s decision on “zudpi jungle” lands as a historic step balancing development with ecology. On World Environment Day 2025, he urged citizens to make tree plantation a mass movement, setting a goal of planting 100 million trees in two years. By October 2025, Fadnavis highlighted the success of anti-extremism efforts in Gadchiroli, noting that the once-violence-stricken forests are now embracing peace. His initiatives reflect a vision of sustainable growth rooted in environmental stewardship.
- CM Shri Devendra Fadnavis

Ganesh Naik Stated that with expanding road networks, elevated roads are being constructed in forest areas to ensure safe wildlife movement. These measures help animals like leopards and tigers cross without injury. He emphasized the government’s commitment to balancing development with wildlife conservation and protecting both communities and ecosystems.
- Minister for Forests - Ganesh Naik

Maharashtra Mulls Leopard Sterilization for Population Control.

Maharashtra is considering leopard sterilization to control its population due to increasing conflicts with humans. It ranks third in India for leopard numbers. The forest department is awaiting central government approval for this plan. Gujarat has also made a similar request. Other measures like habitat enhancement, scientific studies, and safety law reviews are being explored to promote peaceful coexistence.
